As the capital of Italy and the country’s largest city, travelers most often head to Rome to take in the city’s many historic sites which include the Colosseum, Vatican City and St. Peter’s Basilica, the Trevi Fountain, numerous piazzas, and much, much more. Yet if “The Eternal City” weren’t romantic enough, The Castelli Romani (“Castles of Rome”) is an area just outside of Rome that no visitor should miss! This region encompasses a famous collection of hillside and lakeside towns where the city’s elite vacationed because of its breathtaking scenery and appealing summer climate. This long-standing tradition has been continued by the Popes — who still have their summer residence in Castel Gandolfo on Lake Albano. There are a total of 16 castles in the region, which is renowned for the production of wine, roasted pork meats, biscuits (maritozzi), and thin-crust pizzas. By combining a visit to Rome and I Castelli Romani, travelers enjoy the best of both worlds — an ancient city that is still vibrant and exciting today with a fairy-tale world of castles and countryside that embodies the true romance of Italy.
