LOCKE’S DISTILLERY – BIRR – BIRR CASTLE
Locke's Distillery is the last remaining example of a small pot still whiskey distillery in Ireland. It was licensed in 1757 and whiskey production continued until for 200 years until 1957, when the distillery closed its doors. For more information head straight to the History section! In 1982, the local people began restoring the old distillery and today it is open to the public as a Museum. The tour follows the process of making triple distilled Irish Whiskey, from the grinding of the grain to the casing of the final product. Watch and listen as the 19th century water wheel drives the machinery. Most of the original machinery has now been restored and can been seen working daily. Peer into 9-meter high fermentation vats. Learn about the lives and the working conditions of the people that worked here. At the end of the tour you will receive a complimentary sample of Kilbeggan Irish Whiskey. Later, depart and head towards Birr in County Offaly. You will visit the grounds and gardens of Birr Castle. The castle grounds are also home to Ireland's Historic Science Centre, a museum of Ireland's historic scientists and their contributions to astronomy and botany. Afterwards, you return to your hotel.
