KILKENNY CASTLE – JERPOINT ABBEY Today you travel to Kilkenny, undoubtedly Ireland’s loveliest inland city. Visit Kilkenny Castle, built in the 13th century and home to the powerful Butler family for almost 600 years. You will have time to explore this town on your own. In medieval times this was a prosperous trading center and the narrow streets still follow ancient routes. Onwards to Jerpoint Abbey, an outstanding Cistercian abbey, founded in the latter half of the 12th century. The remarkable 12th century foundation is very impressive, even as a ruin, with a beautifully carved 15th century sculptured cloister arcade. The tower also dates from this period. Some 13th to 16th century tomb sculptures in the transept chapels include that of Felix O'Dulany, Bishop of Ossory (1178 - 1202). The small visitor centre houses an informative exhibition. Afterwards, return to your hotel. Religious Heritage Family Friendly Includes: Kilkenny Castle; Kilkenny; Jerpoint Abbey November – March: from $85 April – October: from $90 |
