CLONMACNOISE – BIRR – BIRR CASTLE Today you make your way towards Clonmacnoise. This monastic settlement was founded by St. Ciaran in 545 AD. The settlement was an important center of learning and is set on the banks of the River Shannon. Here you will see decorated high crosses, round towers, and the ruins of many churches. Later, depart and head towards Birr in County Offaly. You will visit the grounds and gardens of Birr Castle. The castle grounds are also home to Ireland's Historic Science Centre, a museum of Ireland's historic scientists and their contributions to astronomy and botany. Afterwards, you return to your hotel.
