Play the southwest and you'll encounter spectacular lake, mountain and ocean views, tricky gorse, genuine sand fairways and a big dose of history. This package includes the classic Killeen Course at Killarney in County Kerry, home to the Irish Open in 2010 and 2011 and one of the oldest and most internationally recognized clubs in the world. The par three 10th hole here virtually plays into a lake. Head to County Clare for more golf with history at Lahinch Golf Club, just a few minutes from the dramatic Cliffs of Mohr. Alister MacKenzie of Augusta National Fame and Tom Morris from St. Andrews had a hand in the original 1800s design.
The hidden gem of your tour is Dooks Golf Club on the Ring of Kerry, an old-fashioned 16-hole course set on sand dunes at the head of the Dingle Bay, with views of water and mountains, rolling green hills and the whitewashed buildings of a nearby fishing village. Golf play has taken place in the breathtaking landscape since 1889. You’re your way out to sea in County Kerry as you play at the iconic Ballybunion Old Course above the Atlantic. One writer described the course as "menacing but spectacular. Tom Watson, who oversaw a 1998 renovation, says the course is a must-do for links enthusiasts.
