Head north for play at some of the most acclaimed courses on the Emerald Isle. At historic Royal County Down, founded in 1889 and located on the shores of Dundrum Bay, with the high Mountains of Mourne as the backdrop, you can test your skills on the famous and intimidating bearded bunkers that overhang with heather and gorse. The course is ranked 5th in Golf Magazine's Top 100 courses in the world, and the par four 486-yard 9th hole, played from the side of a large mound to a fairway 60 feet below, will likely look familiar – it's one of the most photographed in the world. Just seven miles from the famous Giants Causeway, and surrounded by beaches and rolling hills, the tough and dramatic Dunluce Course at Royal Portrush is ranked 14th by Golf Magazine, recognized as one of the world's greatest links courses. Renowned golf architect Harry Colt used natural contours and dunes in the design, and the course is the only one in Ireland to have hosted the British Open (in 1951).
Enjoy more classic play near the beach at the Portstewart Golf Club. Founded in 1894, Willie Park, Jr. redesigned the links course in the 1920s, and the 18-hole championship course, The Strand, was expanded in the 1980s incorporating more dunes into a spectacular front line. Ballyliffen Golf Club Old Course, Ireland's most northern championship venue, is also one of the oldest courses on the Emerald Isle. Nick Faldo called it "the world's most natural golf course." Fairways are undulating, following the contours of the beautiful land and creating challenges. Tom Morris, designer of St. Andrews, laid out the Rosepenna Old Course on a stretch of wild County Donegal coastline in 1891, with length and bunkering added in the early 1900s. Play the original nine "Coastguard holes" here and you truly embrace a piece of history.
