The Women's British Open has also been played on the course: once prior to becoming a Women's major golf championships major tournament, and twice since. The club was founded in 1886. It was the site of the first British Ladies Amateur Golf Championship in 1893. It is an inland links style course, but the wind from the ocean still comes into play. There are 198 bunkers on the course. The course is also unique as it is one of the only links course that starts with a par 3 hole. Par 71, 6360 yards
